Guwahati: Amid the raging controversy that has erupted over the demand to have a Miya museum in Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purukayastha has now demanded a Bengali museum at Kalakhetra to highlight the culture and heritage of Bengali people.

MLA Purkayastha claimed that Bengali people have the highest contributions in the Indian freedom struggle. "Everyone has contributed to the freedom struggle of India. However, Bengalis have had the highest and most significant contributions. Many leaders sacrificed their lives for the freedom movement. People should be aware of the origin of the Bengali people, their role as well as sacrifices in the Indian freedom struggle", Dey stated.

"Sankardeva Kalakshetra is an asset of Assam and it should highlight the cultures and heritage of all communities of Assam. It should also have the culture and heritage of all people including the Bengalis, Bodos and Rabhas", he added.

The demand for a Miya museum in Kalakshetra was made by another Congress MLA, Sherman Ali Ahmed.

Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra is an institution that showcases and highlights the tradition, culture and heritage of the people of Assam including different ethnic tribes and communities of the state. The Kalakshetra is part of the Assam Accord of 1985.
